A Brief Guide to Hurghada, Egypt

Egypt hotels

Looking for somewhere different, refreshing and exciting to go this summer? Then the Grand Resort, Hurghada could be just what you are looking for. It is located on the edge of the Red Sea, with 20kms of inviting beaches and emerald green water, waiting to welcome holidaymakers to its shores. Only around 5 hours flying time from the UK, with a good choice of departures and flight times, and a variety of package deals to suit all tastes, it is well worth considering for your next holiday.

Founded early in the 20th Century, it started life as a small fishing village, its growing popularity as a leading family resort led to it becoming Egypt's second largest city. But it is a city with a difference – famed for its aquatic sports, luxury 5 start hotels and within easy reach of a range of attractions, it offers the best of both worlds; 21st Century Egypt and a link to ancient civilizations.

The city of Hurghada is divided into three different areas, El Dhara is the oldest, more traditional section, where one can go for a quiet stroll, Sekallar is where most of the hotels and tourist accommodation is located and El Memsha is the modern section, with a large bazaar reminiscent of Ali Babar and the Forty Thieves. Here you can shop for the perfect souvenir to take home, gold jewellery or even the latest fashions.

There is plenty to do for all ages. Think of Pirates of the Caribbean – it is right here. Only instead of a creaking pirate ship, take a glass bottomed boat to see the jewels of the sea – exotic fish, noble mantra rays, green turtles and sharp-eyed sharks. Try snorkeling or diving down to an unfamiliar but strangely beautiful landscape of pin-sharp, lace-like corals Go further afield and visit one of Hurghada's off shore islands – Gifitun island, the ‘Bahamas' of Egypt, a uninhabited, un-spoilt paradise fringed with pure white sands, perfect for beach barbeques and snorkeling through the aqua green waters.

Or try being Omar Sharif for the day by going through part of the Eastern desert, first by jeep and then on the ‘ship of desert' your very own Lawrence of Arabia transport, a camel. It will take you through a vast expanse of wind-sculptured yellow dunes to spend time in a Bedouin camp where you can experience their ancient way of nomadic life and culture.

If you still have energy to spare, go back 4000 years in time and choose a day trip to either Luxor, home to the famed Valley of Kings and Valley of the Queens or to Cairo to marvel at the pyramids and the Great Sphinx, the iconic statue of Egypt. No matter what your interests are, Hurghada is the ideal holiday choice. Try it.
